How does the Excel boat show compare with the Ally Pally in March?  I've been to the Earls court venue in the past, but found that the dinghys are squeezed in one corner - not really intrested in the yachts as they are out of my budget, but nice to look at though!

Go to the Dinghy Show if that is exclusively your bag.  There is no comparison imho

Excel is heavy on the luxury powerboats Sunseeker etc. and cruising yachts.  Pretty poor if you want to look at dinghy's or cats.

All of the big manufacturers are represented at both shows to about the same extent, but the beauty of Ally Pally is that a lot of the class associations are there so you get to meet the people sailing the boats, rather than just the people selling the boats!

(we'll be at all 3....)

Hi there
I work for National Boat Shows the team who put the London Boat Show
on. To give you some great news we have over 20 classes of boats at the
show right in the middle of the North Hall. Better news still is that we are
holding a Dinghy Weekender on the final weekend. Yachts and Yachting is
the sponsor of the Class Pursuit Race - about 20 classes featuring 40 -
60m boats. The timetable of events is:

Saturday 19th:
29ers
49ers
Ovington Boats Grand Prix

Sunday 20th:
Class Pursuit Race

As well as the boats in the halls there will also be boats on the hard. Lots
of kit will available from the likes of Barton Marine. if you get a Value
card you could even save a few quid more. Y&Y readers can get a special
weekender ticket for only £19.00 - check out the Y&Y web site for more
details or if you are an RYA member they are doing a special deal as well.
Take a peek at www.londonboatshow.com for general show details.

The last weekend will really be worth going to - the Ovington Boats Grand Prix on Saturday 19th and the Yachts & Yachting 'Battle of the Classes' Pursuit Race on the Sunday. Two days of good racing.

As much as I like the Ally Pally show, I also like the Excel show - they are both very good but provide a very different experience. The Excel show provides a bit more spectacle and razzmatazz with an opportunity to see 'how the other half lives' whereas the Ally Pally show provides an opportunity to meet up with like minded types and have a look at products aimed specifically at dinghy sailing. I usually find some excellent 'retail opportunities' at both shows and the whole family seem to enjoy the day out. Given the choice, I guess the Ally Pally show is my favourite but it's a close run thing and I would rather attend both,

Nigel
