Would it be such a bad thing for us at grassroots level?

In many countries yes. UK less so perhaps, but even then being an Olympic sport, especially a successful Olympic sport, gives the ordinary club extra status and pull on uncooperative bureaucrats.

Broadly I think I would have to agree to that sentiment Jim, it is handy to point out to local bureaucracy that our club is involved in training for an 'Olympic' sport and is probably one of the key benefits, but I'm beginning to wonder if the rest of the price we pay is getting too high. Not least the distancing from us at grass roots level and the body which is supposed to be concerned about our affairs being more concerned with Olympic 'pathways' than the aspirations of the majority who will never have such goals.

There are several countries where sailing would pretty much vanish, I'd imagine. Likely, we would also lose many of our future top sailors to other sports. I can picture the 8 year old overly tall kid being inspired by Giles Scott, but if there is no one there, I can see he might end up going rowing instead, to follow the Olympic dream.

Only issue I have with Olympic sailing is poor tv coverage, shallow I know, but when you look at amounts of money spent, would be nice to see it.
