So Team Hafren (Jeremy Warren & Phil Kirk) from Thornbury SC, set off from Weymouth yesterday (11:22am) in their Wayfarer aiming to break the record (unofficial) for the quickest circumnavigation of Britain.

After a day and a half on the water they are nearing lands end, and are aiming to continue on to Dale before their next stop.

Support the guys at:

where you can plot their progress hourly thanks to yellowbrick.

What is the current record?

Pretty sure some of the maxi yachts that have done the round Britian and Ireland race won't be beaten by a Wayfarer.

Ok, just read that it is for an 'open boat' still I also know people who have done the same thing in a F18, again pretty sure that will have been faster.

Given this is on Dinghy Yarns, I suspect we can assume the record is for something which we would say "dinghy" when we saw it. Cats and Maxi yachts look like what they are, too.

There are a couple of folk at our club that will be interested in this, I wonder how it'll stack up against the Windsurfers that went round time wise.

Should be interesting to read more about their voyage.

Once it's been done in a Wayfarer then someone needs to up the ante and get round the mainland in a twin-trapeze dinghy...

It's been done already in a Wayfayer Mags...

Try reading the website guys, and your questions will all be answered.
Jim, Fran cut the corner via the Caledonian canal and loch Ness, so not the same. Ludo completed the route in 76 days but had a mix of crews and generally only sailed in daylight. These guys are sailing through the night and are looking at 3-4 day stints out at sea.
Currently they are half way across the Bristol Channel just west of Lundy heading to Dale. So that's Weymouth to Dale potentially in 2.5 days which is impressive even in a big boat.

I was aware of that (as Fran rightfully belongs in a Merlin). I was referring to the Hafren plan of staying offshore for 3 days at a time.

Fran went from port to port and slept in proper beds (or in shipping containers!). I can't help thinking I'd enjoy a mix of both options myself...

Message from Jeremy this morning to say they are in Dale, so that's pretty cool - Weymouth to Dale, Pembrokeshire, in one hop in a Wayfarer - brilliant!

The very lightweight jaunt across the channel from St Margarets Bay to Calais Plage I did with him a few years ago in a Laser 2k was very evidently not nearly challenging enough.

that's the difference between a merlin sailor and a cherub sailor I guess.  One sounds infinitely more civilised, but I assume that's not the point.

Anyway, I hope they have fun.  It's certainly something they can tell their grandkids in the future.

Bon Voyage... Smile

Phil and Jeremy left Dale this morning and it looks like winds from a good direction for a few days.

After Weymouth - Dale in three days/nights, not sure where their next stop will be, but maybe Bangor, NI?

sounds brilliant.  I would say real Boys Own stuff, but that would be sexist Wink

the same, but different...

In a Boys Own adventure, it would be a clinker boat with a canvas lug sail, with 2 teenagers on board, maybe being chased by some bad guys? There would be impossible storms to survive, and mountainous waves... not sure I wish any of that on Team Hafren!

...and the book certainly wouldn't mention their toilet arrangements.

(In a 16ft dinghy when you're off shore for 3 days? One can't be shy, that's for sure.)

The guys are doing well!

Just got into Crinan - and that's after around 13 days from Weymouth.... not bad at all!

It is truly an amazing performance.  Having just raced through the same waters and seen the tides, overfalls etc on those major headlands this is truly an amazing performance.

Tonight they are heading on up to Skye. They had an incident with a whirlpool this afternoon which resulted in a 720, but are having a good time.

Team Hafren update.

The guys have been storming along in recent days. Having left Gairloch only a few days ago, they screamed around Cape Wrath and across to Scrabster. A day ashore to restock and off they went again. They sailed around the corner and headed across the Moray Firth, past Fraserbrough and on down the coast. The guys have opted for a longer stint while the weather's good and are already down to Arbroath, and aiming for North Berwick or slightly further as their next stop tomorrow.
They guys are doing amazingly well.

I've followed Hafren since your first "heads up", watching their amazing progress! I'm full of admiration for what they're doing. Well done, guys. Must be an amazing trip. Just brilliant!

+1. Winds look set fair North to North East for the next few days if a bit light.

Hafren update:

The guys left Bridlington this morning and are well passed Grimsby now, and heading out across the Wash to get around to Lowestoft.

They have set themselves an improved target and are now aiming to finish in Weymouth next Friday evening at 7pm.

Keep following their progress at www.xtremedinghycruising.com

Jeremy & Phil have just arrived in Lowestoft, with time for a beer or two.

Top work Team Hafren

What a trip! Certainly a very competent pair! I'm just surprised, given their amazing progress, that their ETA at Weymouth is only Friday! Must be planning a few well earned R & R days on the way!! Respect!

I have been following their progress with interest. I don't know how they do it. At noon today they were doing 5.3 knots over the ground heading South West off Aldeburgh directly into (if Windguru is correct) a 4kt South Westerly! Must be a lot of tide!!

They've been very lucky with the wind so far. They set off early today knowing that the wind was due to swing around to the SW and go light. Just got to Felixstowe Ferry and appears like they may be stopping to wait for the next tidal window.

Just got back from my race officer duty, and checked Team Hafren's position, and they are just going past Deal in Kent. iGRF you'll have to go and wave them by in a few hours!

There is a possibility that the guys are going to pull forward their ETA in Weymouth to Tuesday!

Hafren making great progress - just rounded Selsey Bill at 1600 today and heading for the Eastern Solent

Anyone out for a sail this evening in the Solent who knows what they are doing and want to go say hello, I'm sure they would love to say hi - their tracker is http://yb.tl/hafren2014?ignoreUA=true - and their jib has an orange flash on it.

They plan to make Lymington tonight (it will prob be very late with the adverse tides) but then will get going tomorrow hoping to get to Caste Cove SC at Weymouth prob between 1400 - 1600 on Weds.

Again... anyone who wants to go say hi I am sure would be most welcome.

A nice place to stop. Looks like they will have to open the bar a little earlier at Castle Cove tomorrow!

They have done amazingly well. Probably an unbeatable record because the weather has been so good for then. I wonder how many hours they actually had to beat into the wind on their way round.

I expect people will try it in faster dinghies (National 18, anyone?) which might do it faster, but agree they have had great weather and it will be very hard to better.

Fan bloody tastic. What an awesome achievement. At 14:00 this afternoon on the dot, Jeremy & Phil sailed Hafren into Portland Harbour and Castle Cove SC to complete their circumnavigation of Great Britain in an amazing time of 32days!

What a great adventure and what a result. Well done those chaps and great that the Grauniad had an article on it as well. Dinghy sailing at its best.

1/2 a dozen wayfarers next and make it a race? Maybe Volvo will sponsor it!

Bloody amazing effort by these guys, and makes me realize how blinkered we can be when mucking around in boats as to what it is possible to do.

Yes, I think that would be cool.... I've been telling Jeremy this could spark something off, but he doesn't believe me (.... i.e. that many people would be that bonkers).

With an overall budget of around £10k (that's including the boat!), there's no need for huge sponsors.
One thing they have remarked about is the friendliness of all the sailing clubs they've stopped off at, and the kindness of complete strangers.... hence I am sure such a thing would attract great voluntary support.

During the 32/33 days AIUI they spent 15 or 16 nights at sea - very impressive indeed.
