Hmmm, that might induce me to finally go full circle back where I started.. Then again cassette rudder, dagger not centreboard and that weired gnav twisty thing, not to mention the huge rig tension they freak out about.. |

I came very close to buying a nice Hartley Contender over the weekend as I was on safety boat duty watching them all cock something or other up at one time or another in the tide and light winds. Then my Mrs set me straight with a hard slap to the face with a wet cod. |

Look everyone knows grf would be better sailing a contender on the sea and a streaker on the lake .
But he will never do it, that’s why we love him

The truth is I'd be better sailing a Farr 37 on the sea with others sailing the same, but without Lasers and Aero 7s making us look slow and ancient.
But a weekend spent on safety boat duty at this Open Meeting we've just hosted for the Contenderati, which was like a cross between 'Land of the Giants' and 'Battle of the b**tards' as two brothers of my acquaintance were battling it out for the lead after the first day only to be trashed by Sailings equivalent of that 'Jaws' from James Bond. A huge bloke who made the boat totally fly once the wind just puffed up to a force 3, I hate to think what he'd do in a four to five. As to the G.O.T. analogys, it would be like Tyrion Lanister enjoins the Battle of the b**tards should I ever participate.. I swear to God there wasn't a fella under 6 foot in that class.. So I think for now I'll continue on my quest to make something work for me, I'm nearly there... |

I agree, I'm very similar size to you and while Contender is fine on our big lake up to a f4. I wouldn't be heavy enough or fit enough deal with it in a seaway and would certainly struggle to self recover if it went pear shaped.
Sensible question, although I like your current project, now that you have experience wiring ever thought of borrowing a Musto again for another look, it could be a revelation with more skills in your playbook. |

There's a really good sailor at our club, done the whole Squad thing, won the laser Masters, generally always in theright place doing the right thing. He had a Musto for a few years before I think some injury caused elsewhere forced them to part company, but even he had some nightmare moments with it, launch and recovering. It's our beach you really don't want cassette rudder and dagger to deal with sometimes, it can be merciless, I saw him do at least one mast. I often wonder if I could do better with an MPS now, but there would still be the force four barrier, don't think at my weight, not to mention age, which I have to say is beginning to intrude in my skillsets, would I cope, whereas this fireblade as it's currently setup I can at least get it round a course without stacking it in a force four with gusts of a tad more and even though it's probably a bit more rock n rolla than the MPS, the rig aint as big or over powerful. |
