I've had my 18ft bilge keeler written off in last week's storm. The insurers have made what I consider to be a fair offer, but have asked me to dispose of the boat.

I'm worried that disposal will cost me lots of ££s.

Are there breakers yards for boats? Any near Chichester Harbour?

Thanks for any help.

Does it float?

There's this great big graveyard called the Atlantic. (you'll need a mate to bring you back)

Do the Navy still have a requirement for target practise vessels?

What damage has it got?

Is totally beyond amateur (enthusiast) repair?

can't you dump it on a roundabout and get some care in the community axe-murderers to plant it up for you?

It is repairable, and I would if I had the time, but it was the labour costs that wrote it off.

Angle grinder and skip. Sell the lead to pay for it.

Are you allowed to give away an insurance write off? I'm sure there are people who would be interested. Also, if you sell all the bits that aren't broken, do the insurance company expect a refund on them?

With lead at £1300/ton, they may well be doing quite well on the deal.

cant see there being much lead on an 18 foot bilge keeler , if any

surely its usual for insurance companies to take care of disposal of write offs , unless a deal is made with the owner to keep , loads do to sell as spares , rebuild or pass on, with boats being old and cheap these days financial write offs can even still be sailable .

a paint job is enough to write some boats off !
