Classic Boat have now announced the shortlist for their restoration of the year. It is mostly very beautiful yachts whih have had enormous amounts of money thrown at them.

There is however one dinghy nominated in the European under 40ft section. It is Gently Merlin 16 which was Jack Holts own boat and the Merlin that still holds the record for the most championship wins.
She had been stored for years but Mervyn Allen and Chris Barlow, both active Merlin sailors and very active in the classic dinghy scene, worked over the last few years to get her restored and relaunched for the Holt centenary earlier this year.
Please take a few minutes to vote. Obviously we would like you to vote for Gently but if you must vote for something stunningly beautiful worth millions and restored professionally in a foreign boatyard.
There is a slideshow of Chris` work on the Merlin forum under the title Gently does it, or on the cvrda forum under restoration of the year.

Slideshow of the work in progress.

Note the ply panels were intended for Mosquito aircraft and still have MOD stamps on them also some of Jacks sketches on them including what looks like a plan to get the most out of one sheet of ply.

Great photos Roger. Thanks for that.

Thanks Pete.

Chris Barlow did most of the wood work. I helped with a bit of rivetting.
Chris certainly knows what he is up to. His business is making harpsichords, harps and restoring 400 year old piano forte`s. You can see some of his work hiding under dustsheets in the workshop.

Seconded - Chris has produced some beautiful restorations including our Merlin.

And he's very helpful, especially with glueing Hornets, Roger Wink

I've voted for Gently of course.

The competition out there is pretty stiff so please encourage all your friends to vote. My brother has kindly mailed all his sailing club membership.
