We are having problems with the top batten on our RS200. It won't "pop" when we tack unless there is a fair breeze. We have increased the tension and bend in this batten with no improvement. What do we need to do? Increase the tension further? Decrease the tension? Pump harder in the tacks??

Any advice appreciated

Technique is a lot of it... When I sailed Cherubs one of the top guys sailed with batten tensions such that I could hardly get his battens across at all if I jumped in his boat. He had a technique of giving the mainsheet a perfectly timed flick at just the right point of the tack which shot them all across every time... less tension usually makes it easier to get the battens across, but may compromise sail shape.

It could be that you've overdone the tension.

Less tension and make sure there is a bit of kicker on during the tack

A good roll, if that doesn't work more kicker as you tack and then ease afterwards.

can you easily give the cunningham a yank on a 200? That'll help

We used to have this problem in our RS500. We solved it by making a light weather batten (just a bit thinner and more flexible) and decreasing the tension in the batten with the little key thing you get (Not sure if the 200 has this). If that fails we pump the kicker hard or give the boom a sharp flick to windward. Aggressive roll tacking works well too.

The problem's the same in the Merlin Rocket and the Lark and both their forums have advice on the subject. Flicking or jerking the boom works - grab kicker or spinny pole support and tug sharply.

just grab the boom and jerk it towards you. if not, more kicker and cunningham is needed, or less tension

I always found that more cunningham was the secret to getting battens to pop over combined with a little roll and pump of the main.
