I love keelboat sailing; in fact most of my sailing in the last 10 years has been on keelboats. But I'd say if you are 14, it is better to concentrate on dinghy sailing for the next couple of years. Generally, keelboat skippers like someone a bit heavier than you are likely to be! Perhaps more importantly, on most keelboats you are a member of a quite big team & you need to be a specialist. If you are starting sailing, you will learn more as part of a 2-person dinghy team or single-handing where you have to do everything. Once you are a bit larger and a bit older, if you have a good racing record in dinghies, you will have no trouble getting onto a keelboat crew if that is still what you want to do. Now having said all that, where in Wales do you live? |

yep, another way is to find out when keelboats are racing and go down be prepared to sail as sometimes crews don't turn up or boats need extra weight if u ask around its likely you will get taken along. also, if you become well known around your area with good sailing knowledge, good results etc people will be more willing to take you.
good luck and happy sailing |
