I think the above picture would decide it for me!

I know when they first came out Jon E was not a fan of them, even Paul Goodison doesn't use it. I had the velcro and it was fine for me once I realised the best way of doing it!

I got one of these as I have had the velcro clew straps
come off (the new ones seem a bit better designs). It
does make taking the sail off the boom easier on a lee
jetty.

The main problem is when any grit gets under the sleeve
when on shore or if the boom end drops in the pond mud
(typically if I leave the 8.1 tied up at the jetty). The
sleeve does not slide very well. I therefore spray the
boom with PFTE every couple of months to sort this out -
it then slides better than the velcro strap (although I
never bothered with PFTE for that).

The problem with spraying PFTE is - don't get it on the
deck as you will slip when hiking and fall in!

The advantag with it in theory that you can get the sail closer to the boom and as such can have a tighter leech, therefore can point better.  Its a neat bit of kit but im with Nigel on this one, i took my one off and sold it on e-bay and then reverted back to the rooster velcro strap!

My 'pre-owned' Laser came with one of these already fitted, it looks very flash and the theory is good but in reality it doesn't slide along the boom half as well as it ought to. I took off the split pin and removed the stainless-steel collar - this leaves just the hook and 16mm airblock attached to the outhaul and I use one of the Velcro clew straps with this set-up - seems to work OK,

Rigging: Put it on your boom. Attach to both sail and outhaul.

Use: Move towards mast to add curvature to sail. And vice versa.

I hate to be facetious (honestly ) but this is a bit
of daft
question, even by my standards. Is it not a bit obvious?

You stick it on the end of your boom and it makes the
out haul run a little bit smoother. It tells you what it
does in the blurb on the website you linked us to!

"Produced by Harken, a combination of a low friction
metal sleeve and ball bearing block facilitates easy
outhaul adjustment and will ease more smoothly in light
air Clew rigging is easier and is keeps the sail flush
with the boom
. The sleeve comes fully assembled and
mounted on a display card that includes rigging and use
instructions"
