well, having borrowed a laser rig, i have dicovered that there is actually very little diffence in the dimensions of the two masts, but unfortunately the laser mast is about 2mm to big to fit in the minisail hull. So what i have done is attach a laser boom to the minisail mast, using a laser gooseneck, which eliminates the biggest prob with the minisail rig, ie the rediculous skinny boom ,and nasty plastic `yoke/gooseneck arrangement, As the laser mast is just a few inches longer than the minisail mast, i have extended it at the top end using a short peice of windsurfer mast.I have bought a nearly new laser replica sail for next to nothing, and it all seems to work extremeley well. I have also attached a laser kicking strap to the bottom of the mast, rather than attaching it to the hull just behind the mast, works much better. I am now thinking about how to attach a ratchet block for the main sheet, by the dagger board, as the original minisail arrangment is that the main sheet comes straight of the boom !!!

Porkyman If you put a ratchet block as the last block on the boom before the sheet comes to your hand the system should be fine for most purposes. The only time it's better to have the ratchet block on the boat as you're suggesting, is when the wind dies and you want to pull yourself into the boat on the sheet - with 'off the boom' and a rear traveller the boom comes towards you instead of you coming into the boat! I'd be surprised if the Minisail mast was stiff enough to get the best out of the Laser mainsail. You might consider cutting off the very bottom part of a Laser mast and sleeving in a length thick-walled but smaller outside diameter tube which will fit within both the hull hole and the Laser mast (you'll need to replace the kicker rivets - use Monel metal ones rather than aluminium). Still, sounds like you've made a big improvement already - well done. |
