i have just acquired very cheaply an old minisail, to play with when i`m not on my hobie 17, ( I`m not into racing).   I am wondering if anyone has ever put a laser standard sail on a minisail, as the size is the same (7.4m), and if so, does the laser sail fit onto the minisail mast ?, and if not, can a laser mast be made to fit onto the minisail hull ? As the original minisail sail is shot, and there are so many half decent used laser sails around, i thought this could be a good option to improve the performance of the boat.any suggestions gratefully recieved.

As I remember the minisail stick is a fair bit thinner than the Laser one so I doubt a Laser mast would fit. One way to find out for sure though... ... I'm amazed the sails are the same size. I remeber the MS rig as being a good bit smaller.

I thought of doing this, and decided the best bet would be to use the entire Laser rig, but cut off the bottom of the mast and sleeve in a thick-walled tube of smaller outside diameter which would fit the hole in the Minisail's deck.

You'll need the sliding seat - or maybe better the Moth-style racks favoured by some back in the 70's - for sure.

Let us know how you get on.

Might be better to try a Topper main.

My other half had a minisail for a bit...it was horrible.  Boom was far too bendy too, and the foils were shocking.

But the sliding seat makes it all worth while...

The minisailmain is a little larger than the Laser one, but makes the Laser one seem well cut...It has been done before, but I don't know which mast was used. Easy enough to experiment with borrowed kit.

I had a Minisail with a full Laser rig for my beach boat.  It was ideal because, along with a Topper, it was the only boat that would fit through a barrier at the end of our road.  It was light blue and sold to a scout group about four years ago.

This was with a Laser mast and boom.

In reasonably light winds it was fine but with such a narrow beam I was grossly overpowered in anything stronger.  I did wonder at the time about mounting boards to be able to hike out further or even fitting trapeze wires but never got further than thinking about it.

Nice idea. I had a MS with a sliding seat as a kid, and have happy memories
of it.

The sail was a basic triangle and the boom too thin with a nasty gooseneck,
so a full Laser rig would
make a lot of sense.

Be interested to read how you get on.

many thanks for your comments, i would be particularly interested to hear from `Diversteve`, as to whether there was any adaption required to make the full laser rig fit the minisail, The idea of wings or a s/seat sounds good, although i am not that bothered if it is abit overpowered, adds to the fun!

We have a Minisail at our club with a complete Laser rig - sail mast and boom. I didn't take much notice of how it was done but I can have a look next time it's out.

I've also got some old Moth wings if you're interested, PM me!
