Being relatively local to Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy (and on the look out for some regular sailing), I wondered if anyone actually uses WPNSA on a regular basis, as a sailing club? Yes, there are plenty of events held there all year round, but since they offer membership for dinghy sailing, I would like to know if the venue is used by anyone here, for this purpose. In theory, it should be great, but I'd be apprehensive of joining a "club" that is more geared up to events, not regular club racing. Or is it simply a good place to cruise Portland Harbour from? |

I concur castle cove has much more of a club feel to it where as wpnsa is a bit commercial.

I train out of WPNSA Monday to Fridays and also do most of my one to one coaching from there. Easy launching, hot food available seven days a week etc. etc.

It is good for that and it has great facilities but it's more of a sailing centre than a sailing club

I sail / train / mess about there most of the time. Its fine but there isnt any
club racing despite numerous requests, if you want to club race then join castle cove or weymouth town. If you just want some where to sail from with showers and food then its ideal |

I'm a full member at WPNSA and also park our boat there. As everybody else has said, if you want somewhere to sail from then WPNSA is great. If you want to race then Castle Cove is the better option. Next year we may move to Castle Cove as being a novice to all this I think some regular racing may improve our sailing. Edited by ellistine |

Thanks for all of your input. That's pretty much the gut feeling I was getting about WPNSA - great for events/coaching, but not for too much else. It's a shame really, as it looks like a good venue, and it would be nice to have a wider selection of clubs on this particular section of the South Coast. |

Yes, the RNSA have used Portland as their base since goodness knows when; and we use the facilities at the WPNSA regularly. We have quite a few rally's during the season and get together with the Cove Yacht Club. The RNSA have their own set of trot moorings there.
