That Star race was awesome. As a skiff sailor I MUCH preferred watching that to that 49er medal race fiasco. They look so complicated to sail, that rig and jib system is just bizarre! |

Could someone explain how the jib/whisker pole system works? It looks like they loosen the foot of the jib about a foot and let it fly up like a spinnaker

The mast is raked forward going down wind, this (amongst other things) loosens the jib luff making the jib fuller.
Clicky Also it seems that the jib works better downwind when raised about a foot http://www.starclass.org/artman/publish/article_16.shtml (see bottom of page) Edited by JohnW |

A few reasons for lifting the jib up on the run 1) It stops it flopping around when the hounds go forward several feet on th erun It used to be that the jib was just lifted until the clew ring hit the pin on the forestay connector, some 16" up from the deck, but many boats are now using forestays that connect under the deck and allow the jib to go up to any height. |

A very tense and exciting race, but it looks like Iain and Andrew's winning move was made at the windward mark, they were behind up the beat and then just after the windward mark they were in front of the swedes. So WHY did they cut away at that point to Rob and Shirley talking about how wet and windy it is??? I can see it's wet and windy, show me the race! |
