Ive just bought an 800 that has some old sails with it which i plan on using whilst i learn the ropes. Anyway the main and jib have some tears up to about 3-4 inches long in them. What would be the best way of repairing these? many thanks |

Sticky kevlar tape!
http://www.purplemarine.com/Product.aspx?ProductCode=PSP8 Should do the trick, make sure the area is clean and dry. Make sure you press onto a hard flat surface underneath. I also find that heating the tae with a hairdryer once it's on the sail melts the glue slightly and makes it stick better. Tom |

Not strictly necessary but Apply the tape to both sides of the sail also if it is in a high stress area, some Rip Stop stitches (zig zag stitching perpendicular to the path of the tear) will help the situation |

Pop down to your local sail loft and buy an off-cut of 'Sail Number' material - I used it to patch up my old Vareo sail and didn't expect it to last for long but it was excellent and lasted for ages. Just cut a suitable shape and apply it to both sides of the damaged area as per below:

Agreed on old laser sails I used to use spinny tape and a warm (no hot) iron just enough to melt the glue from the tape into the weave. The repairs used to last longer than the rest of the sails. |

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else
