A lot of it is the angle I think. Its a twin spreader rig so you won't get too much side bend until its being depowered loads, and then upwind only. Edited by JimC |

maybe they've just got a sail that's designed for the mast to stay straightish?
Looking at other photos, there appears to be a deceptively deep cockpit on that thing by the mast step- though I would agree that the boom has clearly been designed by a helmsman. |

Depends how the sail is cut too. If you've got a sail with little luff round then you only need a little bend!

Maybe it's a combination of the angle and the mahoosive masthead kite...

Sorry, to answer my own question 13m2 upwind sounds a tiny amount for something thats a twin trapeze skiff, its only just more than i have on SD. Ok the offwind 30-36m2 is immense but still must be boring going for ages upwind and then pop the kite and your back to the bottom.

13 sq.m. in an efficient high aspect ratio low drag rig is arguably a deal better than 15sqm in a less efficient lower aspect ratio rig, especially if your fleet is based round Wellington! If the extra rag is just added to the leech it really isn't doing a lot upwind. Low aspect ratio rigs are more powerful offwind, but with an F off big kite who cares... Edited by JimC |

Possibly not all that small.
The Rs normally live the windy parts of NZ, a country whose capital sees winds of 32 knots + 173 days of the year and which makes Perth and Cape Town look placid. The ferry in this vid is going from one R Class centre to another....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPCugRA21iA
In that sort of area, 13m may be sufficient, especially since the Rs are not a heavy boat like a Cherub. In reply to an earlier question - as far as I can find out there's no real significance in the "R" designation. Calling classes after letters is an old Kiwi tradition - there were M and V 18 Footers, Ts, Zeddies, P Class, L Class, etc. The Rs grew from a loose collection of odds and sods around Christchurch. |

dont get me wrong cherubs do look gud fun but im not sure about going to a nationals and the person who wins is the person who has the best boat. i know you have to be a good sailor to even cope with one in the first place. i am in no way slating the cherub but personally i would rather sail in a fleet where its won by the best sailor not the best boat

Cherubs (to me) arn't about winning the nationals. Its just about going as fast as possible and having a bloody good time!
You have to be able to sail a cherub first before you even think about winning the nationals. The cost of "the best boat" is still cheaper than most SMODs in a similar leauge. |

If you can't carry it, don't sail it! |
