I am soon going to moving to London and my brother is going off to uni, the problem is we have a RS200. We are going to sell it to raise money to get two single handers. I have been crewing the 200, for around 4yrs and helming/crewing a mirror for about 3-4yrs before the 200. I am about 58kg, haven't helmed in ages and a student so don't have much money. What boat do you recommend.

If I were you I'd put the money in a bank account (not your current account or it might mysteriously turn into beer...) and be a guest helm / crew for a year or so until you decide what you like. That way you won't have the expense of joining a club, boat fees, insurance or maintenance and you can get to try loads of boats. I kept my own boat at Uni for a year & was completely bankrupt by the end of it: the cost of new bits when things were stolen & the cost of joining a club meant I could hardly afford the petrol to get to the club to sail it! Another thing to bear in mind is that lots of the London reservoirs are rather tricky to get to by public transport. If you are sailing with the boat's owner you can often get a lift Once you have stopped being a student you can buy a boat with the money, and you'll have a good idea what you like. If you do decide to buy remember that lots of classes do 'try a boat' days and test sails, so you can try before you buy. |

Everyone will want to suggest their own class is the best, but if you haven't much money you could always stick to crewing. There are loads of students on the Merlin circuit and it's certainly a boat that gives the crew plenty to do, as well as that there are a number of clubs in and around London with active fleets. If you can afford an older Laser that's going to give you the best competition as a singlehander but IMHO it's a hateful boat to sail as the strict one-design means none of the controls really work as well as they should and you can't change the layout to suit what you want and where you sail. You would need the Radial rig.

ummm I thought the radial was a girlies boat, wasn't that in the news recently ?
Go full rig
I used to sail one when I was twelve and only 11stone , capsized a lot , at first , but who doesn't in a laser when starting soon settles down and with nufangled cocontrils should be a walk in the park.
Or you could get a Europe --------- Cheeep ! |

I think a lot of radial sailors might disagree with you there bob! And what will the competition be like in the europe now there is no olympic status? 58kg is at the bottom end of radial weight range, a walk in the park? You wont be able to go for a walk in the park after a windy weekend as your legs will have dropped off and your knees knakered for being 12kg under the min. weight!!!! Edited by Harry44981! |

There's an awfull lot of people who weigh less than 11 stone, and below that weight the full rig is a handfull. You've got to remember this is a boat with a rig which is not very adjustable and a hull which doesn't provide much leaverage.

Most people in the radial rig are male not girls as bob said, it provides very good racing for people not big enough for the full rig, it has very large fleets which make it a fun boat to race! |
