I am getting back to dinghies after a long break sailing cruising yachts
around the south coast & Solent.

At present my wife is learning and the two kids (8 & 5) are enthusiastic
but total novices when it comes to dinghy sailing.

I'm looking for something we can all get out in but would also suit double
or even single handing in the right conditions. Main sailing area is likely
to be Chichester harbour (plan to look at HISC, Langstone & Dell Quay
this weekend) and we will cruise more than race, although the latter is
likely to be on the cards once the skills and confidence are back in place.

At the moment I'm considering a Laser 2000 or as a smaller alternative
the RS Feva - any views on the suitability / merits of these would be
appreciated, as would as any other suggestions (the Comet Trio has been
mentioned as has the new 2000 type contender from RS).

Many thanks for any thoughts...

I would have thought a Wayfarer, Enterprise or GP14 a better bet. And two oppies for the kids

Thanks for this Garry- certainly the Wayfarer might be a decent idea. I
used to sail them as a kid but its so long ago I'd prety much forgotten
about them!
Maybe just one oppie for the kids though!

Having sailed and taught on just about all the boats you mentioned (barr the feva, but i have sailed an rs200 for a season). I think the feva would definately be too small especially for 4 people, and even for you and your wife as it was developed as a youth trainer.  The laser 2000 is a really nice boat to sail with quite a lot of space and stability and an easy to launch kite.  Wayfarers are definatly a good idea though having taught kids on a wayfarer it can get a bit dull.  I think another boat that should maybe be considered is the Laser Stratos, given the fact its available with many options.  First of all you can choose between a centreboard or a lifting keel, also you can get an asymetric kite, and even a trapeze which will be great fun for the kids trust me.

the stratos is a scaled up 2000 so they it is the cost that makes the choice of stratos or 2000

a trapeze option is available on the 2000 but is out of class same as on the stratos
