Topic: anther single hander question... Posted: 18 Apr 18 at 2:29pm |
Hi all
I sail a double hander but crew is laid up at the moment but is going to come back and sail in plus 3 months so don't want to sell the current ride So what to do for the next 3 months... was thinking something totally different RS600 or International Canoe, not worried about racing understand am going to get very wet, want fun and to learn to do something new and a bit different Never trapezed but then have never sat on a seat before either, as I said I'm going to get wet! As I'm not selling the current ride funds are limited about £1k to spend hence canoe or 600 lots of fun for your money I was thinking Any thoughts which would be better...? Thanks folks

No, go for it and keep the singlehander for those days when the crew is not available, best of both worlds. I have done way more sailing since I got the Blaze than when I only had the Spice but, like you, I don't want to stop sailing the two hander. My priorities are different though, I race the Blaze more (and with more success) than I do the Spice.
Either way they're both flighty beasts that will give you all the thrills and spills (and mostly the latter) you could wish for.

600's are a handful, Contenders are more civilised and lovely to sail, in breeze. Personally I think the Blaze is a pig, each to their own! 1K budget might be the deciding factor though. laser,,sorry

Each to their own as you say piglet, IMO the Blaze is probably the best boat I've ever owned. But it does suit my relatively limited fitness these days as it's not a hard boat to sail. I suspect it would not be enough of a challenge for the OP if he's looking at 600s and ICs (both of which I considered but decided were too far beyond my fitness and skill level these days).

The 600 is a great boat. I had one for a bit, was just getting the hang of it when I went back to sailing 2-up.
You need to put the hours in. Some coaching is very valuable, I don't know who is who in the class any more. To some extent it depends where you sail, it's not an easy boat to short-tack up a narrow channel getting to our sailing area. But It's very rewarding.. I was too old when I bought mine. 45? But I had trapezed all sorts of stuff before including a contender years back. I was also not very fit or healthy. It's not that hard to right, but 6 capsizes in a race in F4 when you're learning wears you down. All worth it when it trucks past other boats with zero effort upwind. If one comes your way at a bargain price, it won't be the worst thing you ever buy. But, if you can find the cash, people I trust say the RS700 is easier to sail, and the MPS easier again. A Contender is worth thinking about, if you sail somewhere with some decent breeze, but too many wednesday evening drifters ruined it for me. I'm now Lasering one day a week, it's great but only as much fun as the people you race with. My view is that learning any different boat is a plus. |

You'll probably get a half decent 600 more easily than a half decent IC, and of course some ICs are much older than any RS600.
The IC is without doubt one of the great boats, but 3 months isn't much time to get to grips with all the idiosyncracies. |

Get yourself a 600. You won't look back. I owned one for 4 years and it was the best thing that happened to my sailing. There's no question that it's a handful. Tacking the thing is notorious for a reason but there's simply nothing as rewarding as getting your maneoeuvres on a skiff down. If you do fancy racing, the fleet is resurgent. Get yourself on to the very active Facebook page. You'll find a bargain and a decent circuit. There should be at least 20 boats at the RS games in August. It's still one of the most exciting boats going if you can get used to its quirks.
