Increase tack height = more leach tension
Increase clew board height = more leach tension Rake forward (jib heard forward) = more leach tension Other boats will slide jib cars forward and back, but not an option on self taking jibs. Anyone got ideas on the pros and cons of each method? The 49ers and 800s have clew boards, but leave them on the middle hole and adjust the tack height. Why?

Moving the tack by a hole is a small change.
Moving the sheet up the clew board is a big change in angle, as the car is not far away. |

That's what I'm battling with though. Surely the tack going up moves the whole sail higher by x amount (and aft slightly)?
So if you went up 10mm at the tack, that effectively moves your clew board 10mm higher? Which would be the same as going up 10 mm on the clew board but leaving the tack where it is? And most clew boards are angled backwards slightly too, so as you go up a hole it also goes aft, just like moving the tack. So, wouldn't it just be better to keep the jib as low as possible at the tack, to endplate it, have a better righting moment, and project it further away from the mast/main? Then adjust sheeting angle by using the clew board? That said, you can make finer adjustments on the tack (6mm) whereas the hole on the clew are about 10-15mm apart.

Mozzy, you are probably right, but on some jibs, moving the sheet around the clew holes does subtle/odd things distorting the whole clew area.
We were well advised to copy the fast boys and worry about keeping upright and pointing in a useful direction. So long as the tell tales could be made to move together, it can't be that bad. But we found that the jib was never right unless the main was in the right place with the downhaul and mast bend in the right area. |

I'm just trying to get my head around, trying to think of a better way. But for the first events we'll just be using standard settings.
From chatting to a few of the guys previously winning in the class weren't doing anything too radical. So if it's good enough for them it'll be good enough for us... |
