Looks good, but sit on those decks on a hot day and you'll be getting up again pdq!

Why does everyone say that? When do you ever get to sit on the deck on a hot day?
I'd all but decided on a Farr 37 until i saw that, so as I said on fb what's better long bleck and heavy or short bleck and light. I wonder.. if all the chips fell the right way on a windy race could a Farr 37 stay with them? Edited by iGRF - 10 Jan 18 at 4:42pm |

Breeze in at sea surely at your size you'd be forever dumping power on a Contender. With a lifetime of standy up skills wouldn't a foam sandwich Farr tick most boxes?
I can do the Contender at home inland up to just into a F5 @ 5' 3" & 75kg but I reckon it would duff me up pretty comprehensively at sea.

That's always been the reason I haven't Contendered in the past, that and the hernia risk, if it's light I can sometimes take them in the EPS, but on the basis you always want what you can't have, I need something I can stay in the ball park with when it's breezy. Certainly I could nail them on a race board, but it wouldn't count, I want something to take to them on similar terms, but would a Farr at that length even get close? When the breeze is up I used to have to work bloody hard to stay with them in the Alto and only then if we could use the kite. Hythe is Contender Country, if it blows, they rule, end of.
Then again as you say I couldn't handle that much wind in one either… Edited by iGRF - 10 Jan 18 at 5:24pm |

The Farr looks a frisky, fun little thing in a blow. It has bursts of good speed, especially once the helm gets on the wire on the reaches. But the runs and beats will be slower and generally displacement sailing and that is where, compared with the Contender, the Farr's much shorter waterline length will show up.
They look like they will just about plane upwind but appear to need to crack off a lot and do Farr more distance. The one I see on the race course generally goes for height and the helm is well forward to get the boat's arse out of the water. |

Dave who sails it is a very good RS300 sailor and does well in the Farr when the wind is up. Generally in the top 5 of a handicap fleet I would say. |
