A bit late to count as 2017 but Seascape are selling a dinghy with a choice of 3 sail rig or mono sail www.thinkseascape.com How many times in what to buy are people asking for this! in the add in yachts and yachting mag slight cock up in the comparison with other boats shown when they state the laser has a jib and spinnaker. No I don't work for them.

Topper have been doing this for a while now with the Topaz, everything from a tiny little unstayed unarig (the Uno) up to the Trez with a fairly substantial (17+ metres off wind) three sail rig with a trapeze.
edit :- the uno has a jib as standard these days but I'm fairly sure it was originally available with a main only option..... Edit again, the Seascape is, however, a little more upmarket if their existing fleet is anything to go by. I guess you are referring to the D2/Sescape 14 mentioned on SA (I don't have a copy of Y&Y to hand)? Looks very interesting, they are good looking boats

The seascape website spouts all the usual claptrap about current designs and the concept of race boats and multi-purpose boats.
I wonder if this design will fair any better than the others that have tried it over the years? |

Probably not. We are a conservative bunch us dinghy sailors. I must admit that if there was a boat that was competitive two up and also as a singlehander I might well consider it, as it is I have to have two boats (not that I'm complaining BTW) so I can race on my own or with a crew. The problem I'd anticipate is that a hull which suits a single 10 stone sailor is probably not going to hack it with two 14 stone blokes aboard regardless of how much rag you put up......

The Laser II, 3000 hull is one that might have worked, but of course Laser had a pretty successful single-handed boat to sell already!

I can only see it working if you have detachable hull sections, say, a 2 foot aft extension, making it 16 foot overall.

A mate started sailing dinghies with a Topaz, added a RaceX rig then traded up to a 3000. Even the 3k is probably not competitive with two big blokes aboard. It's perfectly sail-able but unless it's blowing a hoolie..... We did have some fun in F6 two up in the Topaz though once. His son now has the L3k and he has a Blaze......... I suppose the nearest you'd achieve it would be with a Merlin hull and a second, H2-like rig? Am I missing something or are there very few 'restricted development' singlehanded classes?

The different slot for the dagger board has to help with the balance, cant tell if the rig is moved in una rig mode as well. big advantage over Topper option is its hull construction.

Shall we take a punt on it gaining some traction in Europe but getting nowhere in the UK?
