At the moment we have a Pico which has done as well for the past 4 years as a take the kids out boat but the young ones keep growing. We were out the weekend just gone. I went out for a sail it was blowing a 4 to 5 I took it out to sea the wave were a fair size and did not have any probs. Went in and picked my 11 year old up went out but with the combined weight of about 22 stone in she did not ride the waves in the river well at all I did not go out to the sea. I have put this down to the weight in it. So what would be a good replacement for the Pico. We sail on the south coast have access to the sea and a river but also sail on a like a couple of times a year. The new boat will be mainly used for fun and teaching the kids and the odd club race. Thinking about a Stratos or a 2000 but don't want to spend more than a couple grand. Open to ideas we have a few Wanderers at the club but I did sail one in a bit of a blow and did not really like it, It might have been set up badly not sure.
Thanks in advance Chris |

Stratos is way bigger than a Pico (think modern Wayfarer) and heavy to boot. 2000 is a nice boat or, if you want an old school boat try to get a sail in an Enterprise. All will be a considerably bigger challenge than a Pico though. Also consider a Topaz, a bit bigger than a Pico but otherwise quite similar and a lot smaller than the 2k and Wanderer. I've sailed one with two full sized adults in a blow and it was good fun. The Race X rig is probably the best choice, the Uno is pretty basic and the Trez almost makes it into a mini skiff for two kids. You'd get a nice on well within budget. Or, a Laser 3000, cheap as chips and a great boat for a lightish crew, much more skiffy than the others so it might not be what you want.

Wanderers are good boats. Our club has two, but both were set up wrong, mast raked too far forward. Club website sorted that out and they are much better now. Both ours have rows of reef points which helps a lot. They sail well with the main only and the plate raised a bit. Only downside is the weight. The one we keep on a trolley in sailing trim just before launching including the trolley was 487lbs. This is the reason we are getting another mooring as it's really too heavy to move safely on a steep and rocky foreshore. You'll need help launching it and keep kids away from it. I lost it on the foreshore a few years ago, it ran 25 yards and almost hit someone...........

I'd vote for a Mirror as a good step up from a Pico. There is enough to keep an 11 year old interested without the physical demands of e.g. an Enterprise. It even has a tiny spinnaker to play with.
Bear in mind that while the 40+ year old designs still work well, they tend to be a lot heavier to lug around than today's offerings.
