I want a new mainsheet for the Spice and probably (hopefully) one for a Blaze soon. I like the look of Gottifredi Mafioli Swiftcord (£4.50M) but is it any better than Kingfisher Evo Sheet Rope which is almost ¼ of the price (£1.25M)? Or is English Braids Crusing Dyneema any good as there is some on ebay at a good price?
I want something that is easy to hold with good grip (so I'm thinking a soft handling rope would be better). Edited by Sam.Spoons - 23 Oct 16 at 7:09pm |

I swear by Rooster Polylite, easy on hands, runs freely, light when wet, and more importantly does not knot unintentionally

Another polylite fan here. I do have swift cord on my OK and it is nice on the hands. Polylite can be a bit abrasive.
I wouldn't pay £4 per metre for mainsheet though. It's just not worth it. |

I've never liked Polylite. I know I'm probably in a minority there, but I found it hard and not great to grip, or as good for kink resistance as claimed. Swiftchord is much better, to handle and touch, and for me worth the extra price. Marlow Excel Fusion is good too - but probably no cheaper.

I'm not a great fan of polilite either although it did good service on our previous boat.
I'm using English Braids Dyneema Racing which i really rate, but was around the £4.50 mark on eBay. Polilite is great value for money though and certainly the pick of the cheaper ropes.

A previous Solo was supplied with a Swift cord mainsheet, I thought it was super cool rope, but it had a habit of draping over the control line cleats through tacks and jamming, so I switched to Polylite. I use a Ronstan 55 Orbit ratchet block and have no issues with grip. But each to their own.

Polylite seems to run better through blocks than any other, as well as not kinking and not absorbing water. But it's not the nicest feeling or looking, if that matters to you.

Do you wear gloves or not?
I prefer not to for helming so prefer a slightly softer rope, amybe a mm bigger than others use? I think the RS400 is Marlow mattbraid. It was a reel end and very cheap in a yachty shop. The laser, I don't know, but it seems to be programmed to tie itself around my feet! |

I usually do wear gloves but would probably prefer not to. Despite my last post I don't mind paying extra for the nicest mainsheet rope as even the most expensive won't be much more than £5 a metre (so £50 for a mainsheet is not too much on a £2k boat) I just don't want to waste money unnecessarily.
