Why a Stratos? Great for cruising with the family. Wouldn't fancy trying to race it round a short course.

There is a chap races a Stratos at Whitefriars (a small puddle) and does amazingly well in it. Much like a giant 2000, really. He then piles 5 kids in it and goes for a jolly. Of the big teaching boats, the Stratos is one of the nicer ones. But better than a Wayfarer for your needs? Not sure.

To be honest, I'm pretty amazed too. Whenever I've sailed one I've wanted plenty of space round me.

Sounds like a good example for sale here: http://www.laserstratos.org.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=948
though maybe a tad above your budget. It's not the most exciting boat but it gives you the chance to do a bit of trapeezing when not racing and is big and stable enough to pop over to Fisbourne for lunch with a couple of friends... |

I was gonna start a v similar post, question to all you experience sailors is.... Would the crew get much chance to jump out on the trapeze in a stratos ?

Depends on your crew weight. There is quite a lot of sail area and in a F4+, a middleweight crew would have no difficulty trapeezing, especially if you are beam reaching with the genny.
The use of the trapeze is technically outlawed by class rules for racing but if you can persuade your club to give you a dispensation, the Class Association used to suggest using the PY -10, i.e. 1082. |

Get a 400! perfect weight for one, great sea boats, especially in the choppy solent, easy/fast to tack for when you inevitably short tack up the solent shores and there are plenty around the solent if you want competition

RS400 seems to be taking the lead here.
