Great day on the water as a family today. Can any other sport do this? 7 year old Johnny and I racing successfully in the 2000. Clare and Gwen sailing in the Teras - they would have raced but it was a bit too windy for a 9 year old on a course at the end of the Thorney Channel. Anyway they came and watched. I'm not sure their is anything else where a whole family can participate together, and certainly not where its both a mental and physical game.

A Dad came down to our Club today, hired out a Comet Duo with his two young kids and dipped in and out of the race throughout the morning. At times the little lad was helming. Great to see.
Nice to think it might lead to more serious participation in time to come. Wish we could encourage more people to take part like this. |

I love that sailing can be done by people who really struggle with other sports for various reasons, but can get afloat and sail. Huge builder of confidence and self esteem, a shared activity that can really take you away from normal everyday worries for a short while.
I also love that I can go out and test my abilities, be uber-competitive if I feel like it, chill if I don't. |

Well I suppose it is one way of bringing on the next generation of Finn Sailors for 2020 Olympics and beyond. Edited by The Moo - 27 Apr 15 at 10:15am |

I sail less and less these days but I am still very involved with it all. I mend boats, give advice? and sort things out generally for the International Byte C2 Association Combs Chapter. In a way that is what is good about sailing. It is possible to just be involved in so many ways.

Not many sports were people who are in their 70s 80s 90s even, who still take part in competitive events and occasionally win, at my club top sailor is 70.

Does your negativity just eat you up? But TY for reinforcing what I'm saying. Next time there's no wind it's off to the Bowling Green for the afternoon. The others would leave the kids underwhelmed because their kids bodies' wouldn't compete! Too competitive? Perhaps. It's fun tho.

I'm not the one denigrating other sports and pastimes to somehow justify my own superiority now am I?
I'm glad you had a good sail with the family, that's cool, really it is... But to suggest no other sport can offer family fun is either a) supercilious or b) stupid. You decide which. |

Not sure I see too many families playing volleyball, cricket, bowling, paintballing together to be honest. Eating maybe.
