I'm intrigued by the advert I've just received by email from sailboats.co.uk inviting me to buy a brand new 'Festive red Laser' in time for Christmas. Sounds awfully jolly. But what's puzzling me is where the ad says 'lighter weight'.
Lighter than what? How much lighter? Does this mean that if you buy one of these Lasers it will be lighter than other people's Lasers? I wonder who is selling the heavier ones.

I didn't realise you could distinguish between Norths or Hydes!
It all seems a bit strange to me, but I guess this is what happens when everyone becomes unsure about who owns the rights and what actually constitutes a Laser. |

Not sure I would bother paying an extra £50 for someone to not fold a sail....I mean surely it must cost more to actually fold the thing up???? It ain't going to make that much difference to the speed. And oh my god, all white foils, what? Like they used to be?
Now everyone is on about RS bull advertising or the like, well this one really does take the biscuit.

I'd guess it costs a lot more to ship sails rolled than folded, in containers from the far east (assuming that's where they come from)

Yes Maxi - well observed, RS getting a little bit carried with their hyperdrive is worthy of forum mockery, they are still a good bunch of guys and more or less a boat for everyone in their range.
That Ad is though, 100%, all out utter b**locks- and utterly undermines the entire point of Laser sailing. And for what? A short term buck? w**kers... |

This is completely bizarre; one sort of hopes that buyers of both normal and Xmas Lasers could lodge complaints of false representation, since the "normal boat buyers" apparently didn't get the completely competitive and equal hulls they want and the "Xmas buyers" are unlikely to get the light hulls they are promised.
I do find the idea that any one rake will be "optimum" is a bit odd; it must vary according to sailor skill, weight, height, etc as well as the sailing conditions one is aiming to peak at. What are the tolerances like in the UK Lasers? Down here I think it's been accepted for many years that there is effectively no difference in rake between Lasers.

From the same company that flouted the fireball class rules at one of the winter handicaps a few years back hmmffff. This ad is completely bizarre to me. Good old 'smod' racing.
