I started writing this but is was getting boring and too long. So basically I had this idea to practice capsize (Laser) by tieing it about 20 feet away from the pontoon, and just capsize, right it, capsize the other way and do it till I am very tired and very competent at getting it back up - Good idea ?
It will be with the tide, lots of people around, ribs .. It isn't the health and safety side I am asking about - I am just trying to find out if this is the way to do it.
Thanks very much.

We often do this for supervised capsize practice. The only thing that would worry me would be if it were strong tide, because normally the boat gets washed along with the tide about the same speed you are, but if the boat is tied up in a strong tide and you lose contact it would be embarrassing. I'd also stop when I was just fairly tired rather than very tired.

Yep- good idea, see if an experienced laser sailor can spend 5 minutes with you while you do it. A bit of advice will go a long way to ensure you get something out of it.

Yep, good idea - just pick a nice warm day with no wind when capsizing is more fun than sailing. The tide might swing a tethered boat into the shore, though?

Pretty sure the technique for successful recovery is harder in lots of wind/ waves. I'd say practicing in light winds might give you some bad habits and you'd never be able to practice an eskimo roll in that

Thanks All, really great advice. I will make sure the depth will be ok and keep hold of the main. Thanks again.

Really? Strong winds and waves when tied to the shore? Get the technique, then go practice a bit further away when the weather is nasty, with safety boat aware of what is happening. |

I never said anything about being tied to the shore The technique is stand on the board surely, how much can you practice that tied up in no wind? If your tethered you'll have not chance to practice holding the boat on its side while you try and get the boat to move round to head to wind or indeed recover from a windward capsize
