How's that going to happen scooter? Where do you sail? Are they bringing a demo boat to your water? You'll enjoy it, might even change your perspective.

Is the forestay fixed at the hounds (I know I should have looked harder).
Yes - Also the jib is a 'zip-up' one and the halyard returns back down the sleeve. That is incidental though - rig tension is easy to set up to the right tension with the lever system. Some classes have very high rig tension - Icon needs only 'moderate' we find. The jib is relatively large - ie the mast is a fair way back from the bow so the angles you are working with are fine with this simpler approach. If you had a smaller 'rigging angle' - ie small foredeck relative to rig then to get the same effect you need much higher tension in our experience. Remember Icon is intentionally simple ... this keeps it light as well, gives very clean lines, allows the crew to concentrate keeping their heads out of the boat, and means we can provide a very good all carbon rig package for a very reasonable price. The CA is now co-ordinating boat loans ... so why not try one for a couple of weeks ? Mike L. |

Full album of Dinghy Show shots now up at www.fotoboat.com . Lots of good woodies there, especially Collective Spirit and the new BlueMotion 5.50. Lots composite decks on older classes, which looked good. Agree Icon looked great, its nice to see something so minimalist- compare with the black Merlin and the 505, which have so much string you run away screaming. Enjoy your browse thro the album.

Rarity value in UK re Sunfishes- you don't get to see them very often. Sorry to miss canoes, even in a whole day you can't get round all the stands, and there's certainly no time to listen to the talks- did people hear any good ones?

Best bit has to be meeting friends (but don't tell GRF), glossy boats come and go but good company is for ever.

I listened to Dougaldog's Mirror birthday talk, and he was kind enough to use a photo of rupertson sailing his Mirror. Learned lots, and entertained. Cheers!

Another boat which I really liked the look of at the show was the X0/X1. Having seen her sailing at the FOM, it was good to get a good look and to have a chat about how the demoing is going. Really liked the foam pads holding the toestraps up off the deck, and the gnav slider. Very neat.
But does the traditional kite, so important to the design, put it up against boats, which whilst slower, already have a big following? And is it just too big for many? I hope not, as it really looks to have combined the best of new and old for flat water sailing. |
