The freedom it gives
The fact I can go out for an hour or three and I don't have to wory about it costing me money (unlike petrol powered vehicles) Being powered by nature

Noting that Graeme put the word "dinghy" in the title....
1. It's a shedload cheaper than sailing anything with a keel on it. 2. There are hot showers and a bar to ejoy afterwards which is level and does not move about - well at first anyway. 3. Comparing notes on the biggest mess-up of the day 4. The fact that changing classes, buying that new sail "that will improve you performance" and even owning more than one dinghy is not impossible cost-wise 5. Being able to take the boat easily to different sailing locations and the variety/challenges of them (open sea vs pond vs tidal estuary etc) 6. Being able to share the water with and learn from some amazingly talented sailors 7. Sailing all year round I'll think of the rest later... |

had trouble fitting it into 10 and still haven't satisfactorily fitted it all in but: 1)being overpowered2)lots of wind and waves (survival racing) 3)tactics and the mental workout provided by a good team race 4)having plenty of control lines to play with 5)The amazing number of excuses people come up with for poor race results (an important life skill) 6)overcoming the imperfections of individual boats 7)the people , nearly always helpful to the beginners 8)that there is ALWAYS room for improvement (apparently learning new things significantly reduces the risk of dementure so I think sailors will be pretty well covered 9)harnessing nature 10)That dinghies are at the stage they are today (if we all lived 100 years ago the sport wasn't as accessible and didn't have the thrills, spills, and speed we now enjoy)

10) Travelling to opens, meeting new people and those friends that even though I don't see very often I know will stay with me for years.
9) Getting out training, really focusing on something and being able to look back and see the improvement I have made. 8) Going out when no one else will, to challenge myself rather than continually focusing on racing. 7) The mental agility battle that is a close team race, especially against people I know. 6) Bimbling! (although there's disappointingly little to do on the 29er, I have to save it for wooden boats). 5) Being given goes on boats that I would never normally have a chance to, purely based on the inherent good character that seems to be found among sailors. 4) Increasing my confidence in 60-70 boat starts from pure terror to total control. 3) Working with sea scouts to give the opportunity of dinghy sailing to those who would otherwise never experience it. 2) The incredible thrill of winning a World Championship race at the Feva worlds, sailing with one of my best friends. 1) Teaching people of all ages to love the sport I love.

1. Getting the crew to do all the hard jobs rigging the boat.
2. Making the crew drag the trolley up and down the slipway. 3. Shouting at the crew for being the most utterly incompetent competent person I know. 4. Shouting at the crew when he gets me wet. 5. Threatening the crew with my knife when he gets me wet. 6. Blaming the crew for every bad start we have. 7. Praising myself for every good start I have. 8. Shouting at the crew when he falls into the sail. 9. Threatening the crew with my knife when he falls onto the sail, and then creating a running tab of all the crew owes me in beer money. 10. Taking my crew out in possibly life threatening conditions and seeing what happens.

You weren't supposed to take the Knife advice seriously, Alibaba!

Oh don't worry rupert, (although I'm not sure whether to reply to your original message or the edit):
A corrrection to my top 10: any part that speaks of me actually paying money for a knife is of course ridiculous, I mean to say: "steal the crew's knife and then threaten him with it" But your advice has been well taken and a boat knife as well as a Gill personal rescue knife should be in the post!

I can't remember what I said exactly originally, but I know I'd have felt bad if there was a genuine incedent, so changed it!

In no particular order....
1. the anticipation and hint of nerves before racing 2. friends you have made, people you meet on the whole 3. getting the boat into the groove 4. busy start lines & first mark roundings 5. boat bimbling 6. kids sailing 7. running racing, particulaly big meetings with multiple fleets 8. laughing at <endless> PY discussion..... 9. convincing yourself that the next widget you buy will make the 'difference' to everything 10. getting away from it all, just sitting in the boat admiring the view sometimes I'd also say that a nice pint (or 3) of ale after racing with friends on a sunny day is about the best drinking time I have anytime of the year....if you know what I mean, nowadays beats a night out clubbing and pubs till 2am of a Friday or Saturday |

I had to chuckle recently when two of my mates had a go at me about the expensive nature of sailing.. one's a premiership football season ticket holder and dedicated away-day traveller and the other is a MAMIL.... seriously boys, got a mirror? |
