The 200 is faster on an angle it can get the kite really working, so depends on wind strength. The newer 12's are probably close to 1050 in certain conditions.
I would bet on the 12 unless there are lots of reaches where the kite can come in play.

Andy

    Author: Jon Meadowcroft
Subject: Well Ive picked up the 12
Posted: 16 May 12 at 9:43pm

Interesting thread. Good luck with your purchase.

To others considering a 12, I rarely sail my 12 with less than 22 stone on board. If I do, I am sailing with the kids (aged 6 and 8) and I am 14 stone of the deal. Weight is an issue when you are up against the very best lightweights in what is marginal planing for them. Generally to sail a modern 12 well your boat handling needs to be first class. In light conditions with kids this is possible given that the task that they have is largely limited to the jib sheets and the helm can cover other bases. Heavier combinations can get a little bit more leeway in stronger winds, where if you are light you need to be excellent. At 22 stone, a top 5 finish at the Champs has been within our grasp regularly in recent years across a wide range of venue and a wide range of conditions. Of course you can also tell yourself that the boat is ridiculously weight sensitive and this is not possible, but sadly the facts do not bear this out. Like in many dinghies a good light crew is well advantaged compared to a heavier crew, but few classes truly allow the owner to tweak their hull and rig in order to make the boat competitive across a wide range of weights

I first sailed a Twelve 25 years ago (a Baggy Trousers N3193) and I have owned one ever since.

John
