Cancer is the largest cause of death from disease amongst children in the UK. Neuroblastoma, an aggressive cancer of the nervous system, causes more deaths than any other cancer amongst the under-fives. Many children experience life-threatening relapses after achieving remission and some gaining no benefit whatsoever from current treatment options.
The NCCA, founding member of the initiative called INBRACED (International Research and Collaboration for Effective Delivery), draws together charities from the US, UK and wider Europe in order to make funds available for the development of new and more effective therapies.
The regatta is being organised in partnership with Sunsail Events, the leading sailing and events company in the UK, and will utilise the only perfectly matched fleet of yachts in the UK, Sunsail First Match 40s.
"Our aim is to raise £100,000 which will allow us to move forward with an exciting and ground-breaking clinical trial as part of INBRACED, the first ever international trial for relapsed neuroblastoma", says NCCA UK Chief Executive Bettina Bungay Balwah. "Currently there is no established cure for children who have relapsed from this illness."
Simon Boulding, Sunsail events director said "Sunsail is delighted to support the NCCA's first regatta and will do our utmost to assist them achieving their fundraising target."
By giving children in different countries the same promising experimental treatment at the same time, trials can generate results faster whilst delivering the most exciting therapy options for more children.
