Contender

Contender

The International Contender was designed by Bob Miller in 1967 as a potential Olympic successor to the Finn dinghy. It is a single-handed trapeze dinghy that in many ways was ahead of it's time. Strict development of the class over the years has enabled the boat to be raced even in rough open sea conditions.

Despite the moulded non-slip pattern on the GRP decks of the earlier Contenders, in the days before pro-grip staying ‘in contact with your Contender' could be an issue that tested the best of helms

With over 180 boats competing at the Contender World Championships when they were held at Gravedona, the class showed that it still has a world wide appeal. But what is the secret of this, the most attractive of the single handers?

It may look like sacrilege to hide such beautiful varnish work but the modern Contender is a floating advert for the benefits of pro-grip!

Something of a rarity! A homebuilt boat that would go on to win two World Championships (one of which was an exceptionally windy affair out in Brisbane)

The Contender has always been an attractive boat afloat. Add in the wonderful workmanship of the Bonezzi family and you have a truly stunning boat with excellent championship winning credentials

With the minutest attention to detail, new tooling for Contenders is being produced using the latest techniques. The results are setting new standards for quality and fairness, such as this new hull mould taking shape in Australia

Simon Mussell must have dreams about Championship weather such as this. Wind and wave are conditions that show the sea keeping qualities of the Contender off to their best – and at the recent European Championships, Highcliffe didn't disappoint!
